Operating Systems

The Operating System (O/S) is one of the primary components of a cluster. The O/S provides the routing and instruction code to operate the system. There are a number of operating systems available, but the two most common systems are Linux and Microsoft Azure. Click on the boxes below for more information on each operating system.

Linux
Linux
Linux is the most common operating system used for high performance clusters. Linux provides a full featured system along with a number of add-on modules for customization of the O/S to meet specific requirements. Linux clusters are sometimes referred to as Beowulf Clusters.
Microsoft
Microsoft
Microsoft relies on their Windows Server 2012 Standard or Datacenter editions for the HPC operating system and Microsoft Azure for HPC clusters. The Microsoft HPC Pack provides a cost-effective solution for high performance computing.
