Reservoir Simulation is the interface of seismic data and the geological modeling of a potential oil and gas field. Simulations are important tools in determining the potential yield of a field and calculating the economic value of the field. Reservoir engineers will run thousands of non-linear equations that chart fluid flows in a reservoir to produce results. Modeling of reservoirs can identify complex areas such as oil, coal bed methane and equation of state. Simulation models are run multiple times with varying parameters to explore the potential uncertainties of a field. Simulations of this nature require massive computing resources that only an HPC system can supply.

Reservoir management also utilizes HPC to produce production forecasts for investment decisions. Identifying the number of wells required for extraction of the natural resources improves recovery and increases production.
